PCD Tool: Re-grind or Re-tip

PCD-tipped cutting tools are often highly valued due to the cost of materials and the advanced technology required for their production processes. Therefore, solutions that enable the reuse of PCD-tipped tools multiple times after their lifespan ends are always sought after by customers to minimize costs.

There are two solutions for reusing PCD-tipped tools: 1. Regrinding the PCD cutting edge and 2. Re-tipping with new PCD tips. So how do we choose between these two solutions?

1. Resharpening PCD Cutting Edges:

This solution is applicable when:

• The PCD insert on the cutting tool is not broken, chipped, or delaminated.
• The PCD insert on the cutting tool is chipped, but the size of the chip does not exceed 0.1mm.
• The cutting tool is not a reamer or end mill that requires strict tolerances

Advantages:

• Low cost
• Quick sharpening time

Disadvantages:

• The tool must still be in relatively new condition, without any breaks or chips.
• There will be a change (reduction) in the size of the tool after sharpening.

2. Re-tipping PCD tips:

This solution is applicable when:

• The PCD insert on the cutting tool is broken, has large chips, or is delaminated.
• The cutting tool is a reamer or end mill that requires strict tolerances.
• The cutting tool body is of high value: made of alloy materials, has multiple steps, features internal cooling, and has a complex design.

Advantages:

• Re-tipped tools are equivalent to new tools.
• Production time is faster than for new tools.
• The tool body can be reused.

Disadvantages: It is only cost-effective for tools with high-value body Lưu dữ liệu
