Re-grinding PCD tools

PCD tools can be re-sharpened for reuse.
The re-sharpening solution for PCD cutting edges is applicable when:

• The PCD tip on the cutting tool is not cracked, chipped, or delaminated.
• The PCD tip on the cutting tool is chipped, but the size of the chip does not exceed 0.1mm.
• The cutting tool is not a reamer or end mill that requires tight tolerances.

Advantages:

• Short lead time

Disadvantages:

• The tool must be in relatively new condition, not cracked or chipped.
• There will be a change (reduction) in tool size after sharpening.

Costs:

• The sharpening cost is usually about 30% of the cost of a new tool.
• Save up to 70% compared to buying a new tool.
• The accurate cost depends on the specific type of tooling.

Performance:

• Re-sharpened tools have tool life of 60-80% compared to new tools.
